Poinsettias are familiar blooms as they are known as the “Christmas Star” and the “Christmas Flower.” These bright red blooms are not flowers but are modified leaves called bracts. What you see are bracts which are designed to attract insects to the tiny yellow flowers in the centre of the plant.

Poinsettias also come in different colours including cream, yellow, and pink. The fancy colours in shops such as blue are produced using dyes.

In today’s language of flowers, festive colours such as red, white and pink poinsettias represent good cheer and success. The flowers are also said to bring wishes of joy and celebration.
